Your first afternoon in Christchurch
A practical starting point for a first visit: choose a few central-city places, leave time to look around, and make the walk part of your day.
Begin with a little orientation
Start by finding Cathedral Square on your map. From there, choose the places you most want to understand rather than drawing the longest possible route. A street, a riverside pause and a courtyard can make a satisfying afternoon.
If you are joining the Ultimate, the meeting place is nearby at Tūranga, but specifically at the Gloucester Street doors. A building’s postal address is not always the entrance where your guide is waiting.
Look up on New Regent Street
Pause to notice the façades before choosing somewhere to sit. This is a good place to think about the details that make one street feel different from another. Keep clear of the tram tracks and leave room for people moving through.
On the Ultimate, New Regent Street is part of the route and a stop for included gelato. Independent visitors should check individual businesses for their current hours.
Leave room for the river and the Arts Centre
A river path changes the pace after busy streets. The Arts Centre offers another contrast, with heritage stonework and courtyards. You can see the outdoor setting without turning the afternoon into a schedule of admissions.

Keep your plans realistic
Our full city route covers 5.5 km over three hours. A shorter independent outing can focus on one area. Allow extra time if you want to stop for lunch, shop, or visit an exhibition.
Choose footwear you can walk in comfortably. Take layers and a rain jacket. If distance, cobbles or standing time may be an issue, ask about the route before booking.
A guided introduction, or your own route?
A guide adds context and takes care of the route. Independent exploring lets you change direction whenever you like. Neither requires seeing everything in one day.
For a guided afternoon, read the Ultimate’s meeting point, distance and inclusions before checking availability. For a return visit, pick one place from the walk and spend longer there.
