Your first afternoon in Christchurch
A practical starting point for a first visit: choose a few central-city places, leave time to look around, and make the walk part of your day.
Begin with a little orientation
Start in Cathedral Square. From there, there is so much to see. A pastel-coloured Spanish Mission street straight out of the 1930s, or perhaps take a reflective moment by the riverside.
If you are joining the Ultimate Christchurch Walking Tour, the meeting place is nearby at Tūranga, but specifically at the Gloucester Street doors, opposite The Court Theatre.
Look up on New Regent Street
Pause to look up at the façades before choosing somewhere to sit. Take a moment to admire the pastel coloured buildings and their Spanish Mission style architecture. Keep clear of the tram tracks and leave room for people moving through.
New Regent Street is part of both tour routes. Christchurch in 90 stops here for included gelato. On the Ultimate Christchurch Walking Tour, your included gelato is at Rollickin’ on 98 Cashel Street near the end of the tour.
Leave room for the river and the Arts Centre
A river path changes the pace after busy streets. The Arts Centre offers another contrast, with heritage stonework and courtyards. You can see the outdoor setting without turning the afternoon into a schedule of admissions.

Keep your plans realistic
Our full city route covers 5.5 km over three hours. If you would prefer a shorter outing, we also offer a 90 minute Christchurch walking tour.
Choose footwear you can walk in comfortably. The Canterbury weather is unpredictable, so take layers and a rain jacket, if needed.

For a guided afternoon, choose Christchurch in 90: Express Walking Tour, departing at 14:00 and finishing around 15:30. For a longer morning walk, choose the Ultimate Christchurch Walking Tour, departing at 10:00 and finishing around 13:00.
