Where to stay in Khaosan Road: House of Machine Boutique Hotel
Khaosan Road - you've probably heard of it. You've probably heard a LOT about it. And you're probably planning on going. Which brings us to where we are now: where should you stay in Khaosan Road? This is a road that has a long, long history with backpackers (and I should know - I backpacked it with my family when I was a child!) The road itself, the roads surrounding Khaosan - you name it, there's bound to be a youth hostel right around the corner. And yeah, yeah, youth hostels are fine and all, but what if...
What if you're looking for somewhere high end to stay in Khaosan Road? Somewhere really nice, where you can experience the vibe that Khaosan Road has to offer, while still offering you a place to relax and feel a sense of tranquility.
Well, we've found just the place.
Allow us to introduce the House of Machine Boutique Hotel right in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand.
Just to be completely transparent with your, this hotel isn’t located exactly on Khaosan road. If you’ve ever visited before, you’d know that this isn’t a great thing, it’s a truly EXCELLENT thing. House of Machine is a five minute walk from Khaosan road, so you can avoid all of that thumping bass and deep fried scorpions being thrust in your face every few steps. As well as being a few minutes from Khaosan road, there are all kinds of other things you can do as well. We recommend exploring more of Bangkok Old Town, visiting the red swing, and making your way to Kor Panich to try some Michelin rated mango sticky rice.
We stayed in room 402, located on the fourth, AKA the top floor of the hotel. Just a heads up, there isn’t an elevator here, but we didn't find the stairs to be an issue. It was actually kind of the opposite; each floor was beautifully designed, offering glimpses of the surrounding buildings through the windows on every floor, as well as a chair to sit on (in case you do need a moment to get your breath back!). This building was like going through an old shop house - perhaps that’s what it was in its earlier life?
I’m not joking, when I say we gasped when we saw our room. To take it one step further, after our host said their goodbyes, our gasps quickly transformed into a high five - once we were out of earshot, of course. Why were we so excited? Well for starters, we couldn’t get over the SIZE of our room. We had a functioning kitchen space (with a fridge and microwave), an enormous bedroom and bathroom, and we'd also been told we had our very own private garden.
If you’re familiar with Bangkok, you know that having a garden is a bit of a rarity, particularly around the central city, where space is at a premium. But there was a garden. And it was a BIG one. And even better, it was all ours. Decorated with hanging plants, fairy lights galore, chairs and an enormous day bed, this space was hands down our absolute favourite thing about this hotel. We didn't get a photo of it at night, but when it was all lit up - just wow.
As well as your room, there are quite a few public spaces you have access to. The hotel has an extremely aesthetically pleasing cafe downstairs that serves homemade ice cream (yum!) There's an entertainment room too, with beanbags, a TV, and access to another private garden. Another perk - it has free cookies, tea, and coffee. There's a meeting room right next to it as well.
So if you haven’t heard of House of Machine before, don’t be too surprised. This place is BRAND new. We’re talking September 2023! We literally stayed here in November 2023, so literally just two months after opening. That’s it! And the whole thing was so beautiful and well laid out. We truly couldn’t recommend it more. If you’re thinking of visiting Khaosan road or Old Bangkok Town in general, you should definitely consider being based out of the Hous of Machine Boutique Hotel. She’s a beauty!
