Songkran in Bangkok 2024: The Ultimate Guide
Arriving by tuktuk is a really fun way to celebrate Songkran in Bangkok 2024!

Where to celebrate Songkran 2024 in Bangkok? That's the question on everyone's mind. We've been around Bangkok, we've done the research, and we're going to tell you everything you need to know about Songkran in Bangkok 2024.

What is Songkran?

Songkran is the Thai New Year. It takes place on April 13th every year and is a three day celebration. Water is a hugely important part of the festival as it symbolically washes away the previous year so you can get ready for the next one. It's celebrated in Thailand in the form of the world's largest water fight!

What do you need for Songkran?

First up, what do you need for Songkran? You know, the 2024 Songkran essentials. And trust us, you're absolutely going to need them. This is what we recommend having on hand for the ultimate Songkran celebration.

  • A Songkran shirt. Think Hawaiian style florals and bright colours. Bonus points if you can convince your significant other to match with you.
  • A water pistol. Top tip: you can think ahead and order one on Grab, or purchase one on the day from a street vendor. Simple.
  • A waterproof bag. You can usually get these while you're out celebrating. Try to get one made of clear plastic with a strap to go around your neck, so you have easy access to your phone and money.
  • Goggles. There's a lot of water EVERYWHERE, so these make it a whole lot easier for you to see.
  • Cash. Have some on hand. Sometimes you need it to pay people to refill your super soaker.

Are there any special events taking place in Bangkok for Songkran?

Songkran is a huge deal in Thailand - after all, it's the new year celebration! Lots of night clubs and day clubs put on special events and festivals. These are some of the Songkran nightclub festivals in Bangkok 2024.

S02 Songkran Water Festival: At Live Park on Rama 9 you can go and see some epic DJs. International acts such as Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, the Chainsmokers, and many, many more will be blasting beats all through the Songkran celebrations. You can find more information and tickets here.

Where should I celebrate Songkran in Bangkok?

The whole city joins in to celebrate Songkran and you're bound to experience a taste of the celebration no matter where you are. If you're looking for more of a party vibe, then these are the places that we recommend:

Silom: Arrive by BTS Skytrain to the Sala Daeng stop and get amongst one of the BIGGEST festival spots of all. You're going to be a little sandwiched in at times, but the overall vibe is good, with smiling faces and bucketfuls of water sloshing everywhere. One of the things we loved (and massively impressed us) about the Silom area was that people were still on the street selling food. That's right, you can still get your fried chicken street food fix - even when it's in the middle of a water fight.

Soi Cowboy: You might think you're about to enter the seedy side of Bangkok when you're in Soi Cowboy - and generally speaking, you'd be right. But at Songkran it was a little different. It's a narrow street, it's easy to get a drink, and there are plenty of people armed with water hoses, not afraid to get you soaked. Music is blasting, the vibe is good - overall, Soi Cowboy is really fun (and close to public transport!)

Khaosan Road: Whether you're a tourist or a local, there is just something so fun about visiting Khaosan Road during Songkran. The streets are wide, so there are places to move and there's music blasting the whole way down the street - in typical Khaosan fashion. Overall: Khaosan was really, really fun.

Anything else?

Now for the serious side of Songkran. It is dangerous - particularly on the road. Be safe and be careful, because people do get overexcited. Another thing, tuktuks can be quite a good way to get from one place to another, and so can public transport (although you can transport your water guns). Have fun, and enjoy your Songkran celebrations!
